Super capacitor (Super Capacitor) is a new type of energy storage electrochemical component. It is a component between traditional capacitors and rechargeable batteries. It stores energy through polarized electrolytes. It has the discharge power of traditional capacitors and also has the ability of a chemical battery to store charge.
The power density of supercapacitors is higher than that of ordinary capacitors of the same volume, and the stored energy is also higher than that of ordinary capacitors; compared with ordinary capacitors, supercapacitors have faster charging speed, shorter charging and discharging time, and can be cycled tens of thousands of times. Supercapacitors have wide operating temperature range, and can work at -40 ℃ ~ +70 ℃, so they are very popular when they come out.
Supercapacitors have many advantages and are suitable for auxiliary peak power in industrial control, transportation, power tools, military and other fields; supercapacitors can also be seen in backup power supplies, stored renewable energy and alternative power supplies.
So, how did supercapacitors develop? As early as 1879, a German physicist named Helmholtz proposed a supercapacitor with a farad level, which is an electrochemical component that stores energy by polarizing electrolytes. By 1957, an American named Becker applied for a patent on an electrochemical capacitor using activated carbon with a high specific surface area as an electrode material.
Then in 1962, Standard Oil Company (SOHIO) produced a 6V supercapacitor with activated carbon (AC) as the electrode material and sulfuric acid aqueous solution as the electrolyte. In 1969, the company first realized the commercialization of electrochemistry of carbon materials capacitors.
In 1979, NEC began to produce supercapacitors and began the large-scale commercial application of electrochemical capacitors. Since then, with the continuous breakthrough of key technologies in materials and processes, and the continuous improvement of product quality and performance, supercapacitors began to enter the development period and are widely used in industry and in the field of household appliances.
Since the discovery of supercapacitors in 1879, the widespread application of supercapacitors has condensed the efforts of many researchers for more than 100 years. Until now, the performance of supercapacitors has been continuously improved, and we look forward to using supercapacitors with better performance in the future.
