Two Factors Determine the Life of Ceramic Capacitors

The life of the capacitor is related to the voltage at both ends, the current flowing through the capacitor and the temperature around the capacitor.

Capacitor life decreases with increasing charging voltage. The increase of charging voltage will lead to the increase of electrical stress and temperature on the ceramic dielectric during the charging and discharging process of the capacitor, which will accelerate the development of the discharge channel and increase the leakage current, resulting in the shortening of the life of the capacitor.

The presence of the discharge circuit load slows down the temperature increase of the capacitor, thereby prolonging the life of the capacitor. Under the condition of no-load continuous charge and discharge, to increase the charge and discharge life of the capacitor to 105 times, the charging voltage needs to be reduced to about 70% of the rated voltage; under the condition of continuous charge and discharge with l0Ω load, to increase the discharge life of the ceramic capacitor to 105 times, the charging voltage needs to be reduced to about 80% of the rated voltage.

The life of the capacitor is not the same at different ambient temperatures. The ambient temperature of the capacitor should not be too high or too low, so as to maintain the life of the capacitor.
